Vancouver's Mount Pleasant is where the middle-class meet the street criminals, prostitutes and drug dealers alongside boarded up businesses, pawnshops and greasy spoon restaurants. Doug and Sarah Cameron have only just moved into their new Mount Pleasant home when their six-year-old daughter pricks herself with a used needle she finds in the backyard. Four blocks from the Cameron house is Nadia, a teenage prostitute and heroin addict who lives in a slum with her boyfriend turned pimp/pusher Nick. Nadia's regular john is the affluent Stephen Burrows who lives on the other side of town with his elegant wife Anne, full time social coordinator, and their rapidly maturing 13-year-old daughter, Genevieve Buechner, whom both are oblivious to. As these couples interconnect, the course of their lives is changed forever.
