Gould held no job but depended on friends and well-wishers and their contributions to "the Joe Gould Fund." After Mitchell wrote about him in The New Yorker, Gould became a minor celebrity. Their relationship grew more intense over the years as Mitchell became the keeper of Joe Gould's secret."
