  • "The Work That Makes You Feel Most ...

by Richard von Busack In India, the dispute over a family’s property involves a very contemporary Delhi girl and familial resentments she is too young to remember. Set in the old city of Ahmedabad, Prashant Bhargarva’s first feature Patang (“Kite”) follows the fighting-kite sportsmanship that was the subject of the Afghanistan-set The Kite Runner. But what a difference. Where the former was sensational melodrama, Patang is an intimate, Satyajit Ray-like story of conflict along the faul.....

  • Interview With Aj Meadows: The Slen...

The popular online myth regarding the Slender Man is now on its way to becoming a film. Recently on Kickstarter, AJ Meadows began his campaign on Kickstarter to raise the funds necessary for production. The goal for the campaign is $10,000, but AJ hopes to raise $20,000 to ensure the movie will be top notch. Fans of this internet sensation have already pledged over $4,000 in the last three days alone. We had a chance to talk to AJ about this film and his inspirations for taking on this popu.....

  • Beasts Of The Southern Wild

By Richard von Busack A gumption-crazed little girl survives what looks like post-industrial living in Beasts of the Southern Wild (tickets and showtimes here). She’s so cute that she’s even called “Hushpuppy.” And if you don’t count Hushpuppy, this Faulkner-meets-Shirley Temple film is less hypnotic than it seems to the Sundance audience, or to the Cannes jury that awarded it the Camera d’Or. Hushpuppy (Quvenzhane Wallis) lives in a waterside squatters’ camp called “The Bathtub”. T.....

Among the recently started campaigns on Kickstarter, we found Tony Pemberton. He already raised over $35,000 with 28 days to go until the campaign ends. We had the opportunity to speak with Tony about the documentary and his influences. Q: Where did the inspiration for this documentary come from? What was it abou.....

  • Neil Young Journeys

By Richard von Busack Jonathan Demme once made the best rock concert film ever. And Neil Young Journeys (tickets, showtimes here) Demme’s film of Young’s 2011 Le Noise concert in Toronto, is up there with Stop Making Sense. Demme’s 2006 Young concert movie Heart of Gold (review here) was often very touching, but it hit the nostalgia button too hard. That’s probably inevitable when you play the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. By contrast, this stunning film of Young’s Canadian solo.....

  • Interview With Akil Du Pont: "Silho...

Among the sea of directors and writers turning to Kickstarter to raise the funds necessary to make their films, we found Akil DuPont. Akil brought his new film, “Silhouettes”, to Kickstarter with the intent of raising $8,500 to cover production costs. He came away from his campaign having raised $10,005. What struck us most about Akil’s campaign was the success of his last major project, “Underground”.  The film was both beautiful and terrifying as a glimpse of the history of slavery in the.....
