Biography

Paul Maxwellᅡᅠ(12 November 1921ᅡᅠ¬タモ 19 December 1991) was aᅡᅠCanadianᅡᅠactor who worked mostly in British cinema and television, in which he was usually cast asᅡᅠAmericanᅡᅠcharacters. In terms of audience, his most notable role was probably that of the ex-GIᅡᅠgroom ofᅡᅠElsie Tannerᅡᅠin the character's 1967 wedding in the soap operaᅡᅠCoronation Street. In the 1960s, Maxwell appeared in many TV series produced byᅡᅠITC Entertainment, such asᅡᅠDanger ManᅡᅠandᅡᅠThe Baron. He also voiced North American characters in series filmed byᅡᅠGerry Anderson's production companyᅡᅠCentury 21, most prominently the leading character of Colonel Steve Zodiac inᅡᅠFireball XL5ᅡᅠ(1962) and the supporting character ofᅡᅠCaptain GreyᅡᅠinᅡᅠCaptain Scarlet and the Mysterons(1967). Maxwell also starred as the "Man with theᅡᅠPanama Hat" in the filmᅡᅠIndiana Jones and the Last Crusadeᅡᅠ(1989), as a C.I.A chief inᅡᅠThe Pink Panther Strikes Againᅡᅠ(1976), and as GeneralᅡᅠMaxwell TaylorᅡᅠinᅡᅠA Bridge Too Farᅡᅠ(1977). His real passion, however, was theatre; he starred in theᅡᅠWest Endᅡᅠseveral times, with roles inᅡᅠTwelve Angry Menᅡᅠand the musicalᅡᅠPromises, Promises. After theᅡᅠSecond World War, Maxwell married Mary Lindsay. The couple had one daughter, named Lindsay.
